Formal aspects are not only a key factor in the design of a bathroom, but are also central to the expression of personal style. Choosing the right formal language for the washing area profoundly shapes the impact and atmosphere of the room.
The broad range of different designs offered by Duravit allows every washing area to be individually styled.
Jennifer Politze, interior designer and sanitaryware consultant at Holtzmann & Sohn, has been having a close look at this topic and highlights the significance of shapes for a personal and attractive bathroom design.
A question of taste
“Because shapes can be combined with one another flexibly, they don’t generally follow trends or have a predefined trajectory. At the same time, there’s currently an identifiable tendency toward round designs,” said Jennifer Politze, adding that the choice between angular and round shapes depends to a high degree on individual preferences and the required ambience.
Different shapes convey different impressions: right angles stand out and convey the feeling of stability and consistency, making them a favorite of people with a strong sense of structure and clarity. Round shapes, on the other hand, create a soft, balanced impression, which appeals above all to those who prefer a harmonious and composed atmosphere.
Combinations such as a round above-counter basin with straight-lined bathroom furniture bring together the best of both worlds for interesting contrasts in the bathroom.
Interplay of components
“The impact of the bathroom is not only to do with the shapes selected, but also the colors and materials chosen. Round and angular forms can produce different effects, depending on how they are combined,” said Jennifer Politze. For instance, shapes with defined edges combined with cool colors and smooth surfaces can create a modern and minimalistic aesthetic, while organic shapes with warm shades and natural materials produce a cozier, more inviting atmosphere.
